Charles M. Russell was a 19th century Montana artist who painted dramatic Western scenes, featuring sometimes what people wanted to conceive of the West, and sometimes what it was like:
I think most paintings of Western scenes are overly optimistic as to what life was really like. They're great paintings ... just probably not terribly realistic.
Charlie Russell must have done some commissioned work (I’m no expert). He lived 46 of his 64 years in Montana. His home was in Great Falls. The “Kid” as Charlie was known is the most popular of all western artists. He painted the truth as he knew it to be, first hand.
Very excellent draftsmanship.
